[new!] Xarello 2025
Xarello
The 2025 Xarel·lo comes from Miravete Vineyard in Clements Hills, Lodi, California, the vineyard’s third harvest, farmed by Markus Bokisch, whose Spanish roots and deep experience working with Mediterranean varietals have shaped his thoughtful, site-driven approach to farming. Originally from Spain, Markus has built a strong reputation in California for championing Mediterranean grapes and helping them thrive in warm-climate sites.
The wine was made with a direct-to-press approach, followed by native primary and secondary fermentation, and aged in stainless steel to preserve purity, precision, and tension.
Xarel·lo is a white grape native to Catalonia, most famously grown in the Penedès region, where it plays a key role in traditional Cava alongside Macabeo and Parellada. While it is one of the most widely planted white grapes in Catalonia, it remains quite rare in California, where plantings are still limited but steadily emerging. My focus and momentum have been on climate-adapted, high-acid Mediterranean varieties that thrive in warmer regions while still maintaining freshness and structure. Xarel·lo fits right into that space for me—it’s one of those drought-tolerant, coastal Mediterranean grapes that brings balance, energy, and natural acidity, especially as we think about a changing California climate.
For me, this wine sits at the intersection of Catalan heritage and California precision. It is restrained yet expressive, and I expect it to evolve beautifully with time, gaining aromatic complexity and mid-palate depth as it ages.
Tasting Profile:
Naturally high in acidity with a pronounced mineral backbone, this wine is aromatically restrained yet quietly complex. It opens with subtle green apple skin and ripe pear, layered over wet stone and chalky mineral tones. On the palate, it is linear and tightly structured, driven by vibrant acidity and delicate stone fruit undertones and a distinct saline edge.
